Your Thoughts: Secular Music

20 03 2009

This is the start of a new series of posts that will be updated with your thoughts. This weeks topic: Secular Music and music in general. Do you think it’s okay or not okay for Christian teens to listen to secular music, do you think it depends, some music okay, others not? Comment on this topic and I’ll update it on the main post. If you wanna post references or quotations to validate your thoughts that’s fine.

Giovanni: I think it’s fine for us to listen to any type of music we like as long as it’s not like rap or really bad. But Christian music is probably better, just discovered this up and coming cool band called Colma Clarity based our of California. They’re music seems really rat.

Jenna: I think that it is fine to listen to secular music, as long as it’s clean. I love christian music, but I also love some secular music. Christian music is awesome, as it encourages and we can use it as worship. But, there is also secular music that can encourage us, or is just good to listen to. When it’s all about drugs, and alcohol, and sex and degrading women A LOT, it’s not good to listen to obviously. It encourages doing these things which are wrong. But yeah, Anyway, that’s my opinion.

Daniel: I think its best to listen to just Christian music but I also believe some secular songs are okay. It depends what the song is about. With Christian bands most of the time it’s all about worshiping God and the daily struggles of life. With secular music it ranges from all types of areas and some times is okay. I believe it is wrong to listen to music that uses the Lord’s name in vain, that shows women as sexual objects, that suggest that doing drugs, and getting drunk or crunk is a good thing. Also I believe that it is wrong for bands to show selfishness/ pride for themselves and to suggest that God is not real and that sucide is right and that abortion is right. All these reasons are why I choose to listen mostly if not all the time just to Christian music.

Now although I don’t listen to rap myself, I think that saying ‘No rap’ isn’t right. However, that is not to say that the majority of is provocative/show women as sexual objects/promotes gangs and murder/millions of other bad things. But my case in point is Kayne West, he has a song called ‘Jesus Walks’ which I heard a couple years ago, and it was pretty good. There’s always a radical in every type of music.

Now for me, I like for the most part, the bands that hold the same morals as I do, such as Switchfoot and Relient K. It really just depends what the songs they sing are about. Oh, and I listened to Colma Clarity; I liked them.

I listen to Christian rap. Some good rap bands are Ambassador, Grits,KJ 5 2, Cross Movement, Verbs, Manafest and 20/20. So their is good rap.

I listen to a lot of both christian and secular music.I also listen to a lot of rap as well considering my roots (I’m from L.A) and while some of it is bad a surprising amount of it speaks about rising above gangs and violence.I think there are both bad and good artists in any genre of music.
